A Journey to Wellness Inspired by Centuries-old Practices

The Harmonious Blend of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture for Optimal Health

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), with a history spanning over may years, is among the oldest healthcare systems still in practice today.

It continues to be used by Registered Acupuncturists, testament to its enduring relevance.

Good health is achieved when the body’s energy flows smoothly. However, when this energy flow is blocked or disrupted, it can lead to pain, injuries or illness.

The Science of Acupuncture: How It Contributes to Healing and Wellness

Acupuncture Has Been Proven Effective for Physical and Emotional Healing, But How Does It Work?

Scientists Have Found that Acupuncture Works in Three Major Ways and It Is in This Way that It Can Treat Many Different Conditions:

1.) As pain reduction, 2.) As a regulator of the physiological system, and 3.) As an enhancer of the immune system. Studies have shown that acupuncture can increase the release of endorphins (the body’s natural pain killers), and therefore increases the body’s threshold for pain perception. As a result, acupuncture is used for the treatment of acute and chronic pain without the use of drugs or surgery. For example, in the treatment of menstrual cramps stimulating an acupuncture point called “Spleen 6” will relieve the pain.

What Makes Acupuncture a Natural Treatment for Stress, Depression, Anxiety, and Insomnia?

After an acupuncture session, patients often feel euphoric and calm thanks to the boost in serotonin levels. This increased circulation also makes acupuncture an excellent treatment for managing inflammatory conditions, especially in areas like frozen shoulder where blood flow might be blocked.

Certain puncture points can improve white cell count in immune deficient patients and increase immunoglobulin levels in healthy individuals. Additionally, it reduces antibody levels in certain diseases where the immune system is overactive.

Acupuncture and Your Health!

Acupuncture stimulates the self healing mechanisms of the body. Acupuncture stimulates the central nervous system and affects endocrine secretions. These biochemical changes stimulate the body’s natural healing abilities and promote physical and emotional well-being. Stimulating specific acupuncture points can affect certain neuro-hormonal actions in the body which can work by sending specific messages to  create a healing response at certain target areas of the body.

At our acupuncture clinic, we are committed to providing personalized care for each patient. During your initial appointment you will benefit from an individualized treatment plan crafted with the utmost attention to detail and tailored entirely around addressing the specific needs associated with your condition or constitution. Acupuncture

Acupuncture is an ancient practice used to treat a variety of ailments by using hair-thin sterilized needles to gently stimulate the body’s acupuncture points. By restoring energy flow and promoting healthy blood circulation, this traditional method helps bring balance and wellness back into your life.

Cupping

Cupping therapy is an ancient form of alternative medicine in which a therapist puts special cups on your skin for a few minutes to create suction. People get it for many purposes, including to help with common cold, pain, inflammation, blood flow, relaxation and well-being, and as a type of deep-tissue massage. Cupping can benefit any painful congested area, in can stimulate all the internal organs to function better and can tonify the body’s energy and blood. It can also detoxify the body by clearing the excessive heat, and removing dampness and blood stagnation.

According to British Cupping Society cupping therapy can help to treat: Blood disorders such as anemia and hemophilia, Rheumatic diseases such as arthritis and fibromyalgia, cervical spondylosis, low backache, sprains, shoulder tension, facial paralysis, fertility and gynecological disorders, skin problems such as eczema and acne, high blood pressure, migraines, anxiety and depression, bronchial congestion caused by allergies and asthma, and varicose veins.

Ear Seeds

Ear seeds provide a unique, non-invasive way to benefit from acupressure. These small black seeds are derived from the vaccaria plant and can be applied onto pressure points on the ear for up to several days at time with an adhesive tape – making them perfect for pediatric patients who might not feel comfortable receiving needle therapy. Ear seed treatment is often used in cases of congestion or cold symptoms, as well as insomnia and even pain such as toothaches or abdominal discomfort.

Herbal Medicine & Food Cure

Herbal formulas can be used to help the body correct and optimize its internal functions. If you are open to using herbal formulas, a diagnosis can be made so that a custom formula can be prescribed (custom herbal formulas are made within our dispensary and carry an additional cost).

Also, eating the right foods can be just as important for your health as exercise and proper rest. Dietary advice will be provided during your session based on Chinese medicine principles to help further enhance your treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Happens During the First and Follow-Up Acupuncture Treatment Sessions?

On your first visit to our Burnaby acupuncture clinic, you’ll fill out an intake form and have a complete conversation with the practitioner about your major health concerns, prior health history, and current state of health. This conversation aims to find the root cause of your complaint. During the intake, the Chinese Medicine Acupuncturist considers your mind and body as a whole.

The acupuncturist typically examines your tongue and pulses to diagnose the problem. Using this information and all other symptoms, the TCM acupuncturist determines the Traditional Medicine diagnosis which summarizes imbalances and their location. The body’s patterns change with treatment, so follow-up visits adjust the diagnosis and treatment plan based on changes that have occurred.

What is the Treatment Like?

At our Burnaby acupuncture clinic the treatments include modalities used within the scope of traditional Chinese medicine. Depending on the diagnosis we may employ a combination of therapies (such as cupping, electronic point stimulation, Moxibustion, or herbal therapy).

Acupuncture needles are very thin, made of surgical grade steel, and are sterile and single-use.

During an acupuncture treatment, the patient lies down while 10-15 fine needles are inserted into specific points of the body based on the treatment plan. The acupuncturist checks for feedback to ensure comfort and adjusts the needles accordingly. Most patients do not feel discomfort after the insertion but rather a comfortable sensation of warmth, pressure, or movement in the area. Patients are usually surprised at how painless acupuncture is.

Before leaving, the acupuncturist checks for comfort and adjusts the needles as needed. The patient may or may not feel the needles at this point. The needles are left in place for 20-30 minutes, during which time the patient can relax by focusing on their breathing or sleeping. The room temperature is adjusted for optimal comfort and a table warmer or heat lamp may be used. A dim light and relaxing music enhance the treatment’s effects.

How Many Acupuncture Treatments Do I Need?

Our Burnaby acupuncture clinic emphasizes disease prevention. Regular acupuncture treatments boost the immune system, reduce stress, enhance mood, improve memory, regulate appetite, improve complexion, and overall health.
