Bowen Therapy in Burnaby, B.C.

Dr. Hamid Tajbakhsh, BSc., ND offers Bowen therapy as part of his treatments to help patients with a multitude of issues. Bowen therapy was first developed by Tom Bowen in Australia during the 1960s to help patients with acute and chronic pain. These days Bowen therapy is used to address any condition which could benefit from a relaxed nervous system.

Dr. Hamid is one of the few authorities on Bowen therapy in Burnaby, Vancouver, and Canada in general
having contributed to how Bowen can affect not only our physical body but its impact on emotional well-being. He has also contributed to the understanding of Bowen therapy in how it relates to other therapies such as acupuncture.

What Is Bowen Therapy?

Bowen therapy uses a series of gentle and painless soft-tissue maneuvers working on the superficial fascial layer of muscles to aid the body’s nervous system in achieving a state of relaxation. Within this state of relaxation, the body has an opportunity to address structural and functional imbalances thereby restoring the innate ability of the body to heal its self.

After only a few sessions of Bowen therapy, patients feel rejuvenated since this therapy increases blood flow to muscles and organs to help bring nutrients to them and also increases lymphatic drainage to help with the detoxification process to remove waste efficiently thereby aiding in the overall self-healing mechanisms of the body.

Bowen therapy is very versatile and can be combined with other techniques within the same session, such as acupuncture, to further enhance its healing action. In fact, Bowen therapy can be used to activate acupuncture points if the patient prefers not to experience acupuncture due to phobias or apprehension.

Which Conditions Can Bowen Therapy Help With?

Since Bowen therapy helps restore function and relaxes the nervous system, it can be useful for almost all conditions. Historically, Bowen therapy has been used to help with:

Chronic pain (e.g. neck pain, back pain, frozen shoulder, hip pain)
Circulation issues (e.g. fatigue, high blood pressure)
Digestive issues (e.g. constipation, diarrhea, IBS)
Nervous system conditions (e.g. insomnia, weakness, tremors, twitches)
Hormonal concerns (e.g. PMS, infertility)
Emotional imbalances (e.g. stress, anxiety, depression, PTSD)

What Can I Expect During Bowen Therapy?

A Bowen therapy session involves a series of precise moves conducted on the body separated by intervals of time which could be 1 to 5 minutes long.

Therefore, as the patient relaxes on the treatment table, the practitioner applies a series of moves and then leaves the room and returns in few moments to apply the next set of moves.

Usually, patients undergo a deep relaxation mode during which some people even fall asleep.

Patients have even remarked that they have never felt so relaxed as they had during Bowen.

Since Dr. Hamid has extra training within fascial therapies, he is able to add Craniosacral therapy to his Bowen therapy sessions to further aid his patients in achieving a faster response to treatment.
